The Key to Adding Pattern in Your Home

Patterns are exciting to use within our homes and can lift a scheme from the ordinary to spectacular.

However, working with patterns and knowing which ones would look best can come as a design dilemma to most of us and can be very daunting. Done correctly though it can make a room stand out, read on to discover the secrets behind adding patterns to your home!

The key to using pattern successfully in your home, is balance.

When deciding on which pattern to go for, always keep in mind the size of the room and spread the pattern throughout.

Let the pattern size determine how it’s used in the room.

Bigger patterns are best suited for things like wallpaper, flooring, window dressings or a statement piece of furniture.

While smaller patterns are best reserved for smaller items such as throws, cushions, lampshades, artwork and vases.

The next important thing to do is combine pattern with block colours that match those found in the pattern.

It is ok to mix patterns but it’s good to keep to a limited colour palette, to avoid a congested or mind-blowing look (and not in a good way!).

You could even swap up the texture and pattern as these will work very well together, so having the block colours in different textures to the patterns will add dimension to the room.Try to experiment with different scales of pattern, if using florals, for example, try combining large flower scale patterns with tiny flower patterns.

Using the same scale in different patterns will just become overwhelming to the eye so always remember to try and have a large, medium and small scale.

Now animal prints may seem particularly daunting to use but combining a few standout pieces to a neutral colour palette can give a dull looking room the right amount of wow…

Just stick to a couple of different patterns so it doesn’t end up looking like a zoo!

If you are nervous, start small by introducing a few scatter cushions or a rug.

Accessories like artwork, lampshades, cushions, throws, decorative vases and many more are the simplest most inexpensive way of introducing patterns to any room. Which will give any space a refresh and can be easily changed to create something entirely different when you get bored!
